The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is a survival horror interactive drama video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

It is the third installment in The Dark Pictures Anthology video game series, following 2019’s Man of Medan and 2020’s Little Hope.

In ancient Akkad during the year 2231 BC, the Akkadians are at war with the Gutian people, while also dealing with famine and plague. The Akkadian King has fallen into madness, taking refuge in his temple and executing Gutian prisoners as blood sacrifices.

This is a horror game, set in Iraq, in which players assume the roles of military operatives special forces searching for weapons of mass destruction unearth a buried temple containing a nest of monsters.
This game features scenes of graphic violence
In this game, players have to make choices to influence the story of the game. Some choices lead to depictions of intense violence.
 Including a sequence in which a woman is impaled on a spear and then she slides down the weapon towards the ground.
A soldier shot in the head, a man impaled by a spike, a woman setting herself on fire, monsters slashing, stabbing, and crushing victims. 
There is also the sight of mutilated bodies throughout the game
Large blood splatters and pools are depicted as characters are injured or killed.
There are some sequences in which soldiers make some sexual jokes e.g. S3men jokes, references of phone-s3x, promiscuity of a character’s mother. and dialogue such as “Only one place I let a woman boss me around like that…And that’s between the sheets.”
This game also includes references of drug usage. 
The game also includes the use of strong language. The words f**k and “sh*t” are heard frequently in the game.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes Gameplay

  • Similar to its predecessor, the game is an interactive drama. The player controls 5 characters who are trapped under an underground Mesopotamian temple during the 2003 Iraq War where they are stalked then hunted by monsters awoken by the chaos.
  • The 5 characters include CIA officer Rachel King, her husband, USAF Lt. Colonel Eric King, USMC Force Recon 1st Lt. Jason Kolchek & Sgt. Nick Kay, and Iraqi Republican Guard Lt. Salim Othman.
  • Throughout the game, players need to make different decisions that can have long-term consequences as they influence how characters perceive each other and the course of the narrative. All five characters can survive or die depending on the player’s decision. As a result, the game has multiple endings.
  • House of Ashes introduces several gameplay changes.
  • The game camera is no longer fixed and is replaced by a 360-degree player-controlled camera. Each player character is also equipped with a tactical flashlight on a specific firearm which can be used to illuminate dark areas and discover new paths.
  • The game also introduces various difficulty levels for the quick-time events.
  • The game features 4 main modes. In addition to the main theatrical mode, players who pre-order the game also gained access to the Curator’s cut, which allows players to experience the story from the perspective of another character.
  • “Shared Story” and “Movie Night”, the two multiplayer modes from the previous games, also return in House of Ashes.
