Orthodox Easter
Orthodox Easter day is celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon after Passover, so the date changes from year to year.
Origin of Orthodox Easter
In 325 AD, the Council of Nicaea decided that Easter would be observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the March equinox.
The Council of Nicaea set the Easter date for most churches around the world, not all Christian churches observe Easter according to the Gregorian calendar. Many Orthodox churches still witness Easter in congruence with the Julian calendar.
Orthodox Easter Celebration
This day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion on Orthodox Good Friday. The Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar to determine its holy days.
In the United States the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate Church, Russian Orthodox Church, and Greek Hellenic Orthodox Church celebrate the day along with other smaller Orthodox Churches. The Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar to determine its holy days.
