2 years before the pair met in Naples, Florida but only saw each other in person. Throughout their relationship, both were in touch with each other through phone calls, emails, and text messages.
Both text messages were recovered from the police investigation. In the conversations, 317 pages of communication with details were found from Carter.
On June 29, 2014, Roy reveal to Carter that he wanted to end his life. She began to suggest ways that he could do so.
Carter wrote a text message saying “I thought you wanted to do this. The time is right and you’re ready, you just need to do it! You can’t keep living this way,” And the next text message she did was “You better not be bullshitting me and saying you’re gonna do this and then purposely get caught,” adding that she’d want to be known as his girlfriend after he died.
On July 12, Roy and Carter spoke on the phone twice before Roy was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning, in his truck.
Two months after his death, Carter texted her friend Samantha Boardman saying “I could have stopped him. I was on the phone with him and he got out of the truck because it was working and he got scared and I f–king told him to get back in.”
“I could have stopped him but I f–king didn’t. All I had to say was I love you.”
In February 2015, Carter was indicted for involuntary manslaughter, which carries a maximum 20-year. When the case was back in 2017, she refused to involve a jury and by August 3, she was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
