Stephanie Garber’s debut novel Caraval was one of the year’s biggest breakout bestsellers and was named to many Best of the Year lists. And with the sequel, Legendary, the games have only just begun. “It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world.”

Caraval Age Rating

Caraval age rating is 13+ which means this book is suitable for readers of the age of 13 and up, but in my opinion, 12 year old can also read this book as there is nothing in this book that a 12-year-old can not handle.

Caraval Parents Guide

The sexual content in the book is limited to brief conversations, where the main male character makes passes at the girl, however, they are brief, and don’t say anything inappropriate.
S3x is mentioned but not described. Kissing and a girl partially undressed (and embarrassed) in front of a man, characters fantasizing about each other.
There is some violence in the novel, and several characters are killed.
Both the sisters in the book are physically abused by their father, and there’s talk of years of his abuse and manipulation.
A face slashed with a knife, a near-drowning, a drugging and kidnapping, and talk of drowning by force with a girl made to watch.
Caraval is full of plot twists, secrets, mysteries, and even a few deaths. stabbings, talk of abuse, and a girl previously jumping off a balcony.
Characters drink small amounts of each other’s blood.
A teen girl drinks to excess, game participants hang out in taverns, a man swigs alcohol out of the bottle.
One particular scene at the beginning where a father asks a boy something along the lines of, “Which one of my daughters have you been tasting?”
Use of word “Bastard” twice.
Some trigger warnings are: Rape Abuse Suicide

Caraval Summary

Welcome, welcome to Caraval–Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . beware of getting swept too far away. [Publishers]

Caraval Review

I will say this book was much better than I expected, it had an interesting and compelling plot, and the magic in it made it even more fantastic. It isn’t too predictable, the characters are well-thought-of, and it sends positive messages of love and loyalty.

Caraval is an incredible book that is a world apart from most other Young Adult fiction novels!! The writing is beautiful and the way the author weaves together the plot is enchanting and will keep you guessing until the end!! Personally, the world that Garber created was what made the book for me and the sisterly love between Scarlett and Donatella only added to this fantastic world! However, I would say that this book would be suitable for a 13-year old (or mature 12-year-old) due to some of the content and the complexity of the plot as the story progresses.
